Description
English:
Arms of The Worshipful Company of Drapers, Greenway Porch (1517), St Peter's Church, Tiverton, Devon (Pre-Reformation imagery)
Arms of The Worshipful Company of Drapers, informally known as the Drapers' Company and formally known as The Master and Wardens and Brethren and Sisters of the Guild or Fraternity of the Blessed Mary the Virgin of the Mystery of Drapers of the City of London: Azure, three clouds radiated proper each adorned with a triple crown or (Source: Herbert, William, History of the Worshipful Company of Drapers of London, London, 1837, pp.389-90). Note: Triple crown is depicted in many forms. See e.g. File:ApotheosisOfTheVirgin 1517 GreenwayPorch StPetersChurch Tiverton.PNG Text from: Old Bancroftians, Connecting Old Bancroftians with each other and Bancroft's School since 1910, Heraldry, The History of the School Crest [1]: The Drapers’ Company’s patron is the Virgin Mary. It has been suggested that the arms represent that from Mary, through the Holy Spirit, comes the divine Son of God: thus the sunbeams represent the brilliance and light of the Virgin Mary, and the cloud which is a frequent symbol for the Holy Spirit. Mary was deemed to be an empress; the symbol for an emperor/empress is the triple crown, still in use by the Vatican City.
