Description
English: Arms of City of Bristol, detail from Arno's Court Triumphal Arch, Bristol. The arch was built c. 1760 by William Reeve, a prominent local Quaker and business man, to the designs of James Bridges. Arms of City of Bristol, as is confirmed by the crest above On a wreath or and gules issuant from clouds two arms embowed and interlaced in saltire proper the dexter hand holding a serpent vert and the sinister holding a pair of scales or, the "two arms embowed" are clearly visible. On the dexter part of the shield also survives the gateway of the castle, blazoned: a castle with two towers domed all argent on each dome a banner charged with the cross of St. George the castle on a mount vert.
