| Description | Arrival at Hiroshima- small but rather crowded station here. I am making my way out to get directions to- and find my way to- the atom bomb dome and the Itsukushima shrine. We will see those later, as we go along in this album. (see subsequent pictures). Hiroshima is the capital of Hiroshima Prefecture in Japan. As of June 1, 2019, the city had an estimated population of 2.089 million. Towards the end of World War II, Hiroshima is best remembered as the first city targeted by a nuclear weapon, when the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) dropped an atomic bomb on the city at 8:15 a.m. on August 6, 1945. This barbaric act ended up in the annihilation of the city and wiped out a large section of it's population, including scores of innocent women and children. (Hiroshima,Japan, Apr/ May 2019) |
