Summary edit

Description

Artemis, the goddess of the hunt, is recognizable by her clothes. Like the “Diana of Versailles” (Ma 589) on display in the same room, she is wearing her hunting attire: a long tunic (chiton), pulled up to make it easier to run, and a cloak (himation) passed over the left shoulder and falling in thick folds and girded around the waist. The lowered left hand may have held a bow; the right arm was raised.

The lost original on which this Roman replica is based may have been a Hellenistic work created around 200 BC and known to us from various copies, including those in the Archaeological Museum in Seville and in the Palatine Antiquarium after which this statue type is named.
