Summary
editDescriptionArtwork in Caves under Valkenburg, Netherlands 02.jpg |
English: A hiding place of Roman Catholic priests and locals and Jewish people during WWII, the art in the cave systems of Valkenburg (Fluweelengrot) cave dates back centuries. Carvings of specific scenes, such as Romeo and Juliet, 1001 nights can be seen along with many paintings, sculptures of pre-historic animals and other memorials by those who hid here. Some of the art in Fluweelengrot includes the names of American soldiers carved into the walls during WWII, when the soldiers stayed in the caves as they liberated Valkenburg from the Germans. |
