Nederlands: Japanse prent met daar op afgebeeld de arts Jhr. J.L.C. Pompe van Meerdervoort die de Westerse geneeskunst symboliseert. De andere figuren stellen de veel eerder in Japan geïntroduceerde Chinese en Daoïstische geneeskunst voor. De Nederlandse marine-arts Pompe van Meerdervoort arriveert in 1857 in Japan om er les te geven in enkele belangrijke onderdelen van de geneeskunde. Hij slaagt er als eerste in binnen korte tijd een volledig Westerse geneeskundeopleiding op te zetten. In 1861 wordt in Nagasaki het eerste Westerse ziekenhuis van het land geopend waarbij Pompe van Meerdervoort een grote rol vervult.
English: Japanese print featuring the physician J.L.C. Pompe van Meerdervoort Esq., who symbolized Western medicine. The other figures represent Chinese and Daoistic medical science, which had been introduced into Japan much earlier. The Dutch naval doctor Pompe van Meerdervoort arrived in Japan in 1857 to teach some major medical subjects. Within a very short time, he succeeded in setting up the first full Western medical training college. In 1861, the first Western hospital was opened in Nagasaki, where Pompe van Meerdervoort played an important role.
