Description
Bahasa Indonesia: Peta infografis jalur rempah

English: Spice Route Infographic Map

Indonesia is the largest archipelago country in the world. Its water area reaches 6.32 million km2 or about 62% of the total area. Sabang on the west end and Merauke on the east end are separated by a distance of 5,245 km. The sea is a link between one land and another that is planted in the archipelago. Familiarity with the vast oceans goes back to thousands of years, at least when the ancestors of Austronesian speakers began to inhabit the islands of the archipelago. They originated from Taiwan and started migrating south 5,000 years ago. Having the ability to adapt to the archipelagic environment, shipping technology is increasingly being developed to be able to navigate wider oceans and farther distances between islands. This is evident from linguistic studies of the history of the Austronesian language. After moving to the islands of the Philippines and northern Indonesia, new vocabulary words emerged related to increasingly complex shipping technology. These maritime traces can still be seen through various rock images of boat motifs scattered in various caves in the archipelago. In 2009, there were 18 sites that had rock art paintings with boat motifs, with locations ranging from the Malay peninsula, the islands of Nusa Tenggara, Sulawesi, Maluku, to Papua.

By utilizing this shipping technology, the people of the archipelago in the past have established exchanges of goods and cultural relations both back north to Japan, east to Polynesia, south to New Zealand, and west to India, and even Africa. Through this sea relationship, Hindu-Buddhist culture began to enter and develop in the archipelago since the IV-X century AD, which later became the background for the establishment of the Borobudur Temple on the island of Java.
