Description

"The Assassination of Garfield", a mural in the left antechamber of the foyer at the Garfield Monument in Lake View Cemetery in Cleveland, Ohio. The monument is dedicated to the memory of President James A. Garfield, who was assassinated in 1881 by crazed office-seeker Charles Guiteau in Washington, D.C.

The foyer and its two antechambers were undecorated when the memorial was completed in 1890. In 1952, the Garfield Monument Association hired four local artists -- Paul Riba, John Teyral, Marco de Marco, and Michael Sarisky -- to add paintings to the lunettes in the west wall of the foyer.

The left antechamber's mural is "The Assassination of Garfield" by de Marco. President Garfield (in brown beard) walks with Secretary of State James G. Blaine, while assassin Charles J. Guiteau fires at Garfield from behind. Ticket seller Robert A. Park cries out from his ticket window.

The right antechmber features Sarinsky's "Garfield Takes the Oath", which depicts the administeration of the presidential oath of office.

Over the door leading to the memorial hall is a depiction by Riba of the four members of the Garfield Monument Fund Committee. In the lunette above Riba's mural is a portrait of Garfield by Teyral.
