Astomonema, a mouthless and gutless nematode that gains nutrition from endosymbiotic bacteria. The bacterial symbionts are intracellular and occupy much of the animal's body volume, except in the head region, which is largely bacteria-free. Footage acquired by Brandon Seah at Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) Marine Science Station (OMSS) in Nov 2017. Fieldwork was performed by Yui Sato and Brandon Seah, while employed at the Dubilier lab, Max Planck Institute of Marine Microbiology. |
