DescriptionAstoria Column (Clatsop County, Oregon scenic images) (clatDA0084).jpg |
English: The Astoria Column was erected on Coxcomb Hill in 1926. Patterned after the Trajan Column in Rome, it displays 14 scenes commemorating important events in the history of Astoria in chronological order. The mural scrolls around the 125-foot-high structure in an upward spiral, illustrating the discovery of the Columbia River by Captain Robert Gray in 1792, the establishment of American claims to the Northwest Territory, the winning of the West, and the arrival of the Great Northern Railway. An interior 164-step spiral staircase leads to a viewing platform.
