Description

This newspaper clipping from the Dominion reports how the Polish children after arriving in Wellington, undertook the last leap of their journey on a train to the camp in Pahiatua. The farewell from Wellington was overwhelming. There were smiling faces of school children accompanied by adults, waving together New Zealand and Polish flags. The New Zealand Red Cross provided lunch boxes and flowers were given as a gesture of welcome. At Palmerston North and Pahiatua many came to wave and welcome the children and their guardians. At Palmerston North station the train stopped for longer than planned due to the crowd of well-wishers. Some people even rushed back home to collect more gifts for the children. From the railway station at Pahiatua they were taken by army trucks to their new home where hot dinner, prepared by the Women’s Auxiliary Ambulance Corps (W.A.A.C.) staff, was waiting for them.

The record comes from the Department of External Affairs collection. To learn more about the children’s life in New Zealand refer to the record below and other records available at Archives New Zealand. The Department of External Affairs was created by Archives New Zealand to describe records transferred to it until the late 1980s by the succession of government agencies that had responsibility for external affairs in the New Zealand Government.
