Description
English: Portrait of Marie Anne de Bourbon (1697-1741), granddaughter of Louis XIV of France
Lot Essay

"In 1729, Jean Marc Nattier (1685 - 1766), already much sought after by amateurs, received an important commission: that of the portrait of Marie Anne de Bourbon, Mademoiselle de Clermont (1696-1741) (Chantilly, Musée Condé), daughter of the late Louis of Bourbon, Duke of Bourbon and sister of Louis Henri de Bourbon, prince of Condé. She is therefore a cousin of King Louis XV. Nattier designed for the beautiful young woman of thirty-two a mythological portrait with imposing dimensions 195 x 161 cm). In the Chantilly park, she is represented in the antique style, dressed in a pearl gray garment and the famous Nattier blue, goddess of the waters. Its upright bars are placed on a large jar which pours water, while the other arm invites a naiad to fill a cup. Our painting takes up part of the portrait. The aquatic aspect is nevertheless present by the visible fragment of the jar and the rushes occupying the background. Note the delicacy and lightness of the drapery treatment, the fresh colors and the painted face without harshness. By its qualities, it is possible that this repetition of the Chantilly painting comes from the workshop of Nattier. As such, we can compare it with a nineteenth century copy made at the request of King Louis-Philippe for the Palace of Versailles and notice that the latter is much harder and drawn than our painting."
