Description
English: Portrait of Empress Augusta of Germany wearing the Order of Louise. This is a copy by Arnold made from a full length portrait by Winterhalter which was in Berlin until the Second World War. Augusta was the younger daughter of Karl Friedrich, Grand Duke of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach. In 1829 she married Prince Wilhelm of Prussia, the future German Emperor. During the visit of the Prince and Princess to London for the opening of the 1851's Great Exhibition, the Princess became a close friend of Queen Victoria, who described their friendship as a ‘rare blessing’. She was one of the Sponsors at the christening of Victoria’s son, Prince Leopold, in 1853. Signed: C. Arnold. Inscribed on the back as a copy by Arnold after Winterhalter, with the date, 1875, and as given by the sitter to Queen Victoria.
