English: In late 2019 and early 2020, eastern Australia was devastated by historic bushfires that burned across the states of New South Wales (NSW) and Victoria. This true-color image taken on November 8, 2019, by the NOAA/NASA Suomi-NPP satellite shows both the heat signatures of the extensive bushfires (red dots) in NSW, and the smoke plumes being blown southeastward over the Pacific Ocean. The wildfires killed dozens of people, destroyed several thousand homes and businesses, and burned an estimated 45 million+ acres in eastern Australia.
