Description

Old limestone quarry.

White limestone, still called tufa Touraine, Saumur or Bourre, has been extensively employed for the Touraine and Anjou constructions.

Since Gallo-Roman times, limestone quarries have been exploited in Anjou and Touraine for the erection of buildings.

The extraction of limestone underground galleries was the extraction technique used most frequently.

The quarryman attacked the coalface using a peak.

Slabs that felled were around 3 meters high by 2.5 meters wide and 0.4 meters deep. These blocks were then sawn by hand at stones of various sizes. Blocks of stone, roughly carved, was then removed from the gallery.
