  • Dansk: Maleriet er udført på grundlag af studier udført på en rejse til Palæstina i 1890, og kunstneren har stræbt efter at give et etnografisk korrekt billede af det bibelske motiv: "I Løbet af halvfemserne følger adskillige bibelske Kompositioner. De er alle stilfærdige og enkle i Opbygningen samt pinligt korrekte i geografisk og arkæologisk Henseende. Man ser overalt jødiske Typer i østerlandske Dragter, og man kan være sikker paa, at det Landskab, de færdes i, er karakteristisk for Palæstina. Det var første Gang, en saadan Realisme, der har sit Udspring i England (Præraffaeliterne) og Tyskland, saas herhjemme." (Mortensen, 1944-45, bd. 1, p. 225).
