Aerial photograph of a B-17F of the USAAF over the North Sea or the Mediterranean, 1943-1944. The B-17 Flying Fortress was the best known heavy bomber in service with the US air arm (USAAF).

Deutsch: Flugaufnahme einer B-17F der USAAF über der Nordsee oder dem Mittelmeer. Die Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress war der bekannteste schwere Bomber der US Luftstreitkräfte (USAAF). U. a. waren nach Ende des 2. Weltkrieges auf dem ehemaligen Luftwaffenfliegerhorst Giebelstadt die 367th, 368th u. 369th Bomb Squadron der 306th Bombardment Group mit rd. 45 B-17G (bzw. aus der B-17F zur B-17G umgebaute) Bomber stationiert, und zwar im Zeitraum 25. Dez. 1945 bis 25. Febr. 1946. Die nächsten Stützpunkte waren Istres-Le Tubé Air Base in Süd-Frankreich, sowie ab 16.08.1946 Fürstenfeldbruck, und ab 13.09.1946 Lechfeld. Die 306th Bomb Group verließ ihre deutschen Stützpunkte in Richtung USA am 25.12.1946, mit Ausnahme ihrer 3. Staffel, 369th Bomb Squadron, die bereits am 29.06.1946 Istres-Le Tubé in Richtung USA verlassen hatte.
