1846
Britain
Linen (marked in ink with J. Waugh No. 7 1846)

During the 19th century men\'s shirts subtly changed shape. This shirt, with its high collar, gathered frills and pleated sleeves is typical of 1840\'s fashions. The amount of exposed shirtfront depended on the style of the waistcoat, which was sometimes cut very low. Occasionally the front was entirely covered by a colourful cravat.
