Summary edit

Description
English: Pot-hook

Wrought iron
England
17th or 18th century

Pot hooks came into use with the open hearth when the only means of controlling the cooking heat was by adjusting the height of cooking pots over the fire. They disappeared with the introduction of the enclosed range in the 18th century. The ratcheted saw-like teeth and the loosely hinged hasp allowed the pot hook to be lengthened or shortened as required. This piece is unusually ornamental, pierced with a design of a blacksmith at his anvil with the tools of his trade.
