Français : Pietro Vesconte est l’un des premiers cartographes à signer des cartes et atlas maritimes que les historiens appellent des « portulans » par référence aux livres d’instruction nautique du Moyen Âge. On a conservé ainsi une dizaine d’atlas signés à Gênes et Venise entre 1311 et 1327. L’atlas portulan de Lyon (BmL, ms 175) est un très bel exemplaire de sa production. Conservé dans une reliure de bois incrustée de motifs géométriques en ivoire, il s’ouvre sur un calendrier circulaire et un motif géométrique montrant le réseau de lignes de rhumbs, qui donnent jusqu’à trente-deux directions de la rose des vents et qui forment le canevas des cartes suivantes. Ces lignes permettaient aux marins de tracer un cap et de mesurer les distances entre deux points. Le recueil est composé ensuite de sept cartes, orientées vers le sud, et finement dessinées et peintes sur parchemin, représentant les côtes de la mer Méditerranée et de la mer Noire et les côtes atlantiques de l’Europe. Elles comportent toutes une échelle de distance placée sur le bord du parchemin.
La planche n° 4 représente la côte de Syrie, de Palestine et d’Egypte, ainsi que l’île de Chypre, c’est-à-dire, l’espace des croisades, des pèlerinages vers Jérusalem et du grand commerce de Méditerranée orientale de la fin du Moyen Âge. Les écoinçons sont décorés de figures enluminées de saints protecteurs, ici saint Georges et saint François.
