Français : Au mitan du 19e siècle, les missions chrétiennes se multiplient en Afrique, encore peu explorée par les Européens, dans le but d’évangéliser des territoires méconnus. Après un temps passé en Éthiopie, Krapf crée une mission protestante à Rabbai, près de l’actuelle Mombasa, entre Tanzanie et Kenya. Il est rejoint par un coreligionnaire, Johannes Rebmann, qui installe une antenne à Kisuludini. Cette illustration dépeint une scène de prêche. Leur travail de missionnaires s’accompagne d’explorations géographiques vers l’intérieur du continent, qui précisent les cartes de la région des Grands Lacs, et préparent une colonisation plus prédatrice. Les deux missionnaires sont considérés comme les premiers Européens à voir le Mont Kenya et le Kilimandjaro.
