Description
Français : A partir du milieu du 19e siècle, des expéditions océanographiques permettent de mieux connaître les fonds marins. Cette carte allemande du Pacifique, datée d’octobre 1911, enregistre ces progrès en même temps qu’elle témoigne du développement de l’impression polychrome. Les variations de la profondeur de l’océan y sont figurées au moyen d’un dégradé de bleus. La carte fournit de nombreuses mesures ponctuelles et signale notamment la fosse des Mariannes, la dépression marine la plus profonde du globe, située à quelque 2 700 km à l’est des Philippines. Celle-ci fut découverte en 1875 lors du voyage du navire britannique Challenger. En 1899, le Nero, bâtiment de la marine américaine, y effectua un sondage à 9 636 m, cote qui est reportée sur la carte avec la mention « Nero-Tief » (fosse de Néro). On remarquera également le tracé des câbles télégraphiques sous-marins (traits noirs) dont la pose fut précisément à l’origine de la multiplication des opérations de sondages. - Bibliothèque municipale de Lyon, mis en ligne sur Numelyo
