Description |
Français : Alexandre Humboldt, jeune savant allemand, accompagné d’Aimé Bonpland, embarque en 1799 pour une expédition naturaliste d’une durée de 5 ans en Amérique équinoxiale. Il s’assure une renommée mondiale en gravissant le Chimborazo, sommet considéré à cette époque comme le plus élevé du monde, et surtout, en publiant Le Tableau physique dans son Essai de 1807. La présentation d’une vue en coupe des volcans Chimborazo et Cotopaxi et de l’étagement de la végétation selon l’altitude, est l’une des premières représentations d’une répartition spatiale précise des espèces. Le Tableau a fortement influencé l’histoire des sciences, malgré les erreurs que Humboldt s’est efforcé de rectifier plus tard dans des publications moins connues.
