Summary edit

Description

Formerly Swindon Corporation Daimler CVG6-30 with Northern Counties body, fleet no. 144. JAM 144E was sold to the Swindon Octobus Project in October 1984 and lasted in community use until 2000 when sold to a new owner. In 2009 she was pulled to vehicle dismantlers PVS Barnsley Ltd for scrap; current [2013] status unknown.

The vehicle is seen following conversion for use as a mobile community centre by a team of BREL apprentices before closure of the rail works the following year. It is standing outside the former tender and paint shop, but it is believed the work was carried out in ‘V’ shop opposite. Air had to be let out of the tyres to reduce height sufficient to enter and leave the building. The black painted oval aluminium plaques in the destination blind positions front and side commemorate its construction and were cast at the works. The bus featured coffee bar, meeting spaces, generator, sound system and photographic darkroom (front of top deck). Subsequently painted externally with images of community activity and railway themes, including GWR locomotives and BR HST 125 train, the vehicle was called the Locobus.
