Ce négatif sur plaque de verre datant de 1928 montre une scène d'arrière cour typique d'un cirque américain, juste avant la représentation du numéro spectaculaire de la production. Le spectacle, ou « superproduction », évolua en un défilé autour de la piste de l'hippodrome à l'intérieur du chapiteau, présentant autant d'artistes et d'animaux que le directeur du cirque pouvait habiller de costumes. Remontant aux premiers cirques américains, le spectacle était à l'origine une représentation éblouissante de contes littéraires ou historiques visant à amuser et édifier le public. La photographie présentée ici montre des chevaux somptueusement caparaçonnés sur le point d'entrer dans le chapiteau, suivis d'un éléphant portant un costume. The spectacle, or “spec,” was a procession that took place around the hippodrome track inside the big top, or circus tent, featuring as many of the performers and animals as the circus director was able to costume. Traced back to the earliest circuses in America, the spec was originally a lavish performance of literary or historical tales intended to entertain and edify the audience. Shown here are caparisoned horses poised to enter the big top, followed by a costumed elephant. The stakes and guide ropes essential to keeping the tent erect are visible. The photograph is by Harry A. Atwell (1879–1957), an official photographer of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus.

Este negativo en placa de vidrio de 1928 revela una escena típica del patio trasero de un circo estadounidense justo antes de la presentación de un número de producción espectacular. El espectáculo consistía en una procesión que tenía lugar en la pista de hipódromo en el interior de la carpa del circo y en la que desfilaban la mayor cantidad de artistas y animales para los que el director del circo consiguiera un disfraz. El espectáculo, que se remonta a los primeros circos en los Estados Unidos, fue originalmente una espléndida representación de cuentos literarios o históricos destinada a entretener y educar a la audiencia.
