Das Hotel entstand aus einer ehemaligen Offiziersvilla um 1860. 1886 wurde es von den Gebrüder Vieth erworben und ständig erweitert und hatte 1898 den ersten Turm. 1908 wurde das Hotel ein Raub der Flammen und brannte 3 Tage. Damals gab es etwa noch 15 größere Hotels aus der Gründerzeit. Viele Hotels wurden abgerissen und ein Teil „brannte nach altem Harzer Brauch ab“. Es gibt also nur noch eine Handvoll der schönen alten Häuser aus der Jahrhundertwende. Das Hotel ist heute noch im Besitz der Fam. Vieth, was eine Seltenheit ist.
