Description

Badwater, in America's Death Valley has a name and location that seems to issue a warning. That's partly justified as people have died in the area due to excessive heat when they have ventured away from roads and other people.

On August 16 2020 a new record high temperature was measured in the valley - 130F (54.4C)

The day I was there it was "only" 122F / 50C. Fortunately it's a dry heat - very low humidity which reduces the apparent severity - but can catch out the unwary. My cameras got so hot they were difficult to hold and I was concerned that they would stop working.

Badwater is also the lowest place in the USA at minus 279 feet (−85 m) below sea level and (for me at least) had a certain fascination. I think it's worth a diversion away from the more obvious places in Death Valley.
