The tricky part of the 146's design was intended to be that it was so quiet and had such great short takeoff and landing capability that it could be flown in and out of city center airports where noise restrictions were affecting the viability of other, older, airplanes. Orange County Airport (AKA John Wayne Airport) in O. C., for example. In the event, as with de Havilland's delightful Twin Otter and Dash 7, the majority of users used them from quite long runways with mixed traffic including noisy and old-fashioned designs. The short runway, convenient downtown sites few and far between, and not well loved by their neighbors. Still, the 146 was very quiet, and was happily operated by PSA and United, two name two, in the USA. Some of the now retired airframes are being considered for conversion to air tankers for fighting wild fires... 05_12_31_1228 |
