Description
English: The Balearic Islands sit in the Mediterranean Sea southeast of Spain and north of Algeria. Four major islands are easily visible from space. From the northeast, the islands are Menorca (also called Minorca), Mallorca (Majorca), Ibiza (Eivissa), and Formentera. Catalan is the native tongue and is one of the two official languages, with Spanish the second. Many of the islands have both a Catalan and a Spanish name. The islands are an autonomous community and province of Spain. The capital of the Balearic Islands is Palma, a city located on the largest island, Mallorca. In this image, the city can be seen as gray pixels on the Bay of Palma on the southwest side of Mallorca. The islands are famous as trendy spots for vacationers, with tourism a primary source of income. The second-largest island, Menorca, bucks the trend of rampant development found on some of the other islands. The island was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1993.
