Description

A ballgame hip protector on display at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Cleveland, Ohio.

Made of greenstone by an Olmec artist in the Veracruz region of Mexico some time between 600 and 900 AD.

The exact nature of the Olmec ballgame is not know, but seems to have involved bouncing a rubber ball from one's feet or hips into a receptacle at the end of the playing field. This stone protector would have been worn as a type of belt. A major theme of the game was the connection between fertility and death. Here, a monster snarls while bordered by human skulls.
