ivil War he was several times invaded by the Confederates.He was largely instrumental in founding the town in which he lived andfrom him it received the name of Germantown, which it still retains. Thusearly did he identify himself with his adopted country in the spirit of citi-zenship. In February, 1865, Mr. Adler, having accumulated by frugality andstrict attention to business considerable means, came to Baltimore and en-tered the wholesale shoe house of H. Frank & Company, when the nameof the firm was changed to Frank & Adler, consisting of Henry Frank,Solomon Frank and Charles Adler, the latter having shown himself pos-sessed of business talents of a high order. Under his skillful guidance theestablishment was carefully systematized, so there there was no needlessexpenditure of time, material or labor. All his transactions wereconducted on principles of unbending integrity, and in negotiating mattersof business his look and manner, keen and decided though they were, weretempered with a courtesy which invariably inspired in those with whomhe was brought into contact a feeling of friendly regard in conjunctionwith the respect which his personality and reputation never failed to callforth. In 1900 his son, Simon C. Adler, was admitted to the firm and nowhas the entire management of the business which his father built up forhim, although the founder still retains an interest in the establishment andlends to it, whenever necessary, the benefit of his profound knowledge andwide experience.
