| Description |
English: Relatively few mammals can beat the banded mongoose for cuteness factor. This species lives in savannas, open forests and grasslands from the Sahel to South Africa. It feeds primarily on beetles and millipedes. Most mongoose species are solitary, but the banded mongoose live in colonies with a complex social structure. This makes them fascinating to watch. I remember one colony where I watched them for almost half a day, they were quite fascinating. A good model for understanding how social lives create selection pressure for genetically determined social-behaviour characteristics. Sound familiar? That is exactly our evolutionary history as well. This family group came to the birdbath yesterday and decided to hang out a while. |
