| Description |
English: Built in 1966, this iconic and distinctive high-rise commercial office tower was designed by George ‘Pete’ Wimberly of Wimberly, Whisenand, Allison & Tong to house the Waikiki offices of the Bank of Hawaii, but has since become known as the Waikiki Galleria Tower. The 16-story building features a glass curtain wall screened by a distinctive tropical-themed sculptural concrete exterior with interlocking arches, reminiscent of the pattern on the outside of a pineapple, which shade the building’s interior and help brace the building’s structure, with the slightly chamfered corners of the tower giving it an octagonal footprint. The building also features a penthouse with a concrete bonnet roof, a podium housing a parking garage and retail space, which was given a postmodernist facelift in more recent decades with EIFS pilasters and tile hipped roofs, and wider arches at the base of the tower, which better accommodate the parking spaces in the building’s parking garage. The building is the most distinctive and iconic of the modernist high-rise buildings constructed on Waikiki between the 1950s and 1980s that transformed a once quiet low-rise oceanside district into a high-rise bustling neighborhood. |
