English: This banner bears the arms of Baron Ferdinand von Hompesch, 71st Grand Master of the Knights of Malta, quartered with the Order's white cross. In 1798 Napoleon's French forces captured Malta on their way to invade Egypt. HMS Seahorse, a British frigate, later seized the banner from the French. Malta, about 1797. Français : Cette bannière porte les armes du baron Ferdinand von Hompesch, 71e grand-maître des chevaliers de Malte, écartées avec la croix blanche de l'Ordre. En 1798 les forces françaises de Napoléon prirent Malte sur leur trajet pour envahir l'Egypte. La frégate britannique HMS Seahorse saisit ensuite la bannière aux Français. Malte, vers 1797. |
