DescriptionBanterwick Barn Pumping Station - geograph.org.uk - 1715942.jpg |
English: Banterwick Barn Pumping Station. Among the handful of pictures for this fairly remote square I was amused to see Graham Horn's "Mystery" photograph 986892
I can now solve the mystery as I visit this place every 3 months to take water level measurements and check data logging equipment. This is part of the Environment Agency's West Berks Groundwater Scheme. Constructed in the 1970s it is a series of pumped boreholes which augment low flowing rivers in times of drought. It seems odd when all we hear about recently is flooding, but when water levels are low it becomes desirable to maintain a minimum flow in some rivers for health, environmental and amenity reasons. Inside here is a well and pump. Water is fed via a pipeline down to the River Pang and thence to the Thames. The scheme hasn't been needed in recent years, but it is kept in full working order because who knows when it could be called upon. |
