Description
English: Sale på Marokko s Atlanterhavskyst va r en af de vigtigste nordafrikanske havne ,

hvorfra de muhamedanske korsarer, „barbareskerne" , drog ud for at overfalde europæiske skibe. Som andre søfartsnationer havde Danmark i midten af 1700-årene måtte t afslutte traktater me d Marokko>, Algier, Tunesien og Tripoli (Libyen) og betal e årlige afgifter, „presenter" , til disse lande s fyrster, for at deres korsarer skulle lade danske skibe sejle i fred. Dette farvelagte prospekt (af ukendt kunstner) viser, som de t siges i teksten, „røverkulen " Sale til venstre og byen Rabat , nu hovedstaden i Marokko , til højre . Imellem dem udmunder floden Bou Regreg og danner en havn , hvori korsarskibene kunne ligge i læ. På reden ses flere skibe, fra venstre en korsar med en tage t fransk prise ; en dansk og en hollandsk handelsfregat, og længst t.h. en chebek med engelsk flag. I forgrunden t.h. ligger de n danske orlogsfregat „Havfruen " (bygget 1760—62) med et par mauriske både ved siden. I 1762 og atter i 1767 anløb fregatten Sale med

„presenter " til sultanen, og tegningen stammer formentlig fra et af disse besøg. Desværre er de to sidste cifre i årstallet afslidt. Den sjældne tegning er en gave til Handels- og Søfartsmuseet fra Venneselskabet. Kilde: H& S Årbog 1976
