Summary edit

Description The U.S. Navy transport ship USS General Hugh J. Gaffey (IX-507) moored at quay F5 at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii (USA). Formerly the transport AP-121, the ship had been commissioned as USS Admiral W.L. Capps (AP-121), an Admiral W.S. Benson-class transport, in 1944. She was decommssioned in 1946 and recommissioned in 1950. The ship was originally transferred to the U.S. Army and had been renamed USAT General Hugh J. Gaffey. Retaining her Army name, the transport was not re-commissioned, but instead was assigned to the Military Sea Transportation Service as USNS General Hugh J. Gaffey (T-AP-121) until being decommissioned again in 1969. General Hugh J. Gaffey was placed in service in November 1978 at Bremerton, Washington, to serve as a barracks ship for the crews of ships undergoing major overhaul. She was struck from the Naval Register in 1993 and sunk during exercise RIMPAC 2000 as a missile target on 16 June 2000 (location: 023° 35' 01.0" North, 159° 50' 00.2" West).
