English: Barton Turn Lock and Bridge No 38, Staffordshire. The lock is the tenth of seventy-six on the 93.5 mile course of the Trent and Mersey Canal. The water level can be altered by 5ft 8in (1.72 metres). Fully opened by 1777, the canal took eleven years to build, initially engineered by James Brindley. The section from Derwent Mouth through Barton (and Burton!) as far as Shugborough was up and operating by 1770. |
