Description
English: The U.S. Navy bathyscaphe Trieste, just before her record dive to the bottom of the Marianas Trench, 23 January 1960. The waves were were about 1,5 to 1,8 m high when scientist Jacques Piccard and Lt. Don Walsh, USN, and Piccard boarded from the rubber raft attached to the bathyscaphe. The destroyer escort USS Lewis (DE-535) is steaming by in the background.
