| Description |
English: Battersea Railway Bridge (1) Battersea Railway Bridge was designed by William Baker, chief engineer of the London and North Western Railway, and was opened in 1863 at a cost of £87,000. It was built to carry The West London Extension Railway over Battersea Reach of the River Thames, linking Clapham Junction to the south of the river with Willesden Junction to the north. It consists of five 120 foot or 37 metre long lattice girder arches set on stone piers.
According to contemporary Ordnance Survey maps published shortly after its opening it was originally known as Battersea New Bridge. Other sources indicate that it was also called the Cremorne Bridge, after the pleasure grounds in Chelsea. Rail traffic is subject to speed restrictions when using the bridge and here a Southern Railways train bound for Clapham Junction trundles across it. The centre of the river is the boundary between the London Boroughs of Hammersmith and Fulham to the left and Wandsworth to the right. |
