| Description |
Please attribute to Lorie Shaull if used elsewhere. The prayer flags are located at the present day Fort Snelling at Bdote, where a concentration camp held Dakota women and children over the winter of 1862. At the end of the US-Dakota War, they were force marched on foot by the US military in November 1862 from the Lower Sioux Agency to this location (a distance of over 100 miles). In May 1863, the interned Dakota--along with about 2,000 Ho Chunk who had had no part in the war--were loaded onto steamboats and removed from their homeland, Mnisota Makoce, to a camp at Crow Creek, in present-day South Dakota. |
