Summary
editDescriptionBeach and long groyne at Hengistbury Head - geograph.org.uk - 318745.jpg |
English: Beach and long groyne at Hengistbury Head Looking down from the edge of the cliffs on Warren Hill, towards the long groyne at the eastern end of Hengistbury Head beach. The sandy cliffs of Hengistbury Head have been rapidly eroded over the past few centuries, mainly as a result of human activity. The primary cause of this instability was the removal of ironstone boulders from the beach and seabed (for use in iron production) here and further along the coast in Bournemouth. The Hengistbury long groyne, visible in the photo, was built in 1938 to help slow down the erosion and longshore drift. You can see that a wide beach has built up here (the tide is low) and the dunes are contained behind a fence. |
