English: Beckett street cemetery The Leeds Township Cemetery, which later became known as Beckett Street Cemetery is a real wildlife haven in the middle of Inner city Leeds. Harehills is situated about a mile from the city centre.
Leeds has one of the biggest stocks of old back-to-back terraced houses in the UK, and many of these can be found in Harehills. Beckett street was one of the first municipal burial grounds in Britain. The cemetery was also been known as Burmantofts Cemetery and Leeds Burial Ground. Many great Leeds dignitaries and soldiers who fought in the Crimean War are buried here. The monument to Britain's oldest steeplejack was recently stolen from here. |
