Summary
editDescriptionBedford Shale-Berea Sandstone contact section (Upper Devonian; Blendon Woods Park, Columbus, Ohio, USA) 4 (35808282836).jpg |
Sandstone over shale in the Paleozoic of Ohio, USA. This outcrop is a boundary section between the Berea Sandstone (above) and the Bedford Shale (below). The Bedford and Berea are part of a coarsening-upward succession that starts with the Olentangy Shale, followed by the Ohio Shale, the Bedford Shale, and is capped by the Berea Sandstone. The Ohio Shale and Bedford Shale are Famennian in age (= upper Upper Devonian). Traditionally, the Bedford and the Berea have been considered as Lower Mississippian. The Berea is now known to be Famennian (~latest Devonian), based on palynomorph microfossils. The Devonian-Mississippian boundary may lie within the Berea Sandstone. A Kinderhookian-aged conulariid has been found in the basal part of the overlying Sunbury Shale. The Bedford consists of soft, grayish and reddish clayshales with minor interbeds of coarser-grained siliciclastics. At this outcrop, only gray Bedford is exposed. The overlying Berea is dominated by bedded quartzose sandstones. The contact is gradational and is characterized by an interval of interbedded shale and sandstone. It's logical to place the Bedford-Berea contact at the base of the first significant sandstone bed. Stratigraphy: Berea Sandstone, upper Famennian Stage to lower Kinderhookian Stage (?), upper Upper Devonian to lower Lower Mississippian (?) over Bedford Shale, Famennian Stage, upper Upper Devonian Locality: stream cut in Blendon Woods Park, Columbus, northeastern Franklin County, central Ohio, USA |
