Summary edit

Description
English: Beech pollard and holly in Winding Stonard wood, New Forest Winding Stonard is a holm or "hat", not really large enough to constitute a "wood". It is made up of oak and beech pollards with many mature holly trees. When this tree was young felling was not permitted, so tenants would pollard the trees (cut off at head height) to ensure a vigorous regrowth of wood that could be used for fuel and charcoal. Management of the trees in the forest changed and it was no longer desirable for beech and oak to be pollarded - it was made illegal in 1698 to ensure a good growth of timber for the nation's naval shipbuilding industry (this was the same year that the first inclosures were established). Pollarding is said to extend the natural life of trees, but these specimens have not grown to a great girth due to the poor soils of the New Forest.
