English: Beeding Cement Works Viewed from Shoreham Road, the A283. A quarry existed on the site back in 1732 and an extensive limeworks was in operation by 1814 utilising the nearby river to transport the finished product upstream to the agricultural areas of the Weald. The first cement factory opened in 1882 making further use of the Horsham-Shoreham railway that was opened in 1866. The works greatly expanded in the first decade of the 20th century and the section in view was built in 1950 further increasing the works capacity. It was linked to the other buildings on the western side of the road by both a tunnel and an overhead conveyor. The works closed in 1991 and have been derelict ever since though much of the machinery is still intact inside. Some of the offices to the west of the road have been taken over by other companies. Arguments over what to do with the site have continued since closure with a number of schemes including a wastefill site and even at one stage it was suggested as a new home from Brighton & Hove Albion football club. In the meantime the quarry now seems to be in the hands of Dudman Aggregates who have a wharf at nearby Shoreham Harbour. |
