Description

There is a lot going on in this photo I took at the 13th century rock-hewn Church of Bet Abba Libanos.

The left half depicts the hardware on the far edge of the outer side of the church's front door. Has this very door been here since the church was consecrated? That seems unlikely.

However old the door might be, its colors and textures are fascinating. I assume when the door was installed, its surface was well planed and smooth.

Now, between the chain's erosive effect as it swings back and forth across the door's surface, and the elements themselves, the door's surface reveals the grain of the tree it once was, looking more like driftwood than the product of a carpenter's shop.

On the right, an enigmatic assemblage of colors, textures and objects meets the eye. I see a rolled-up mat standing vertically immediately to the right of the door. Near the center on the right side of the frame, I think I can make out a lidded basket. As for the rest, they must be church furnishings stored for future use.
