English: This massive concrete building at the intersection of Madison, 12th Ave & Union Street dates to 1909, when the Bekins Moving and Storage Company built the Western half of the current building as a public storage warehouse, one of the first of its kind in Seattle. Designed by A. Warren Gould (or the partnership of Gould and Champney by some accounts), it was to be the first unit of a building that would have been twice as wide and almost twice as tall as what was completed, and would have towered over the neighborhood if realized (Seattle Times, April 25, 1909, p.42). No further additions were made after the construction of the corner unit in 1919. Later known as the 12th & Madison building, it is still mostly occupied by self-storage units with the ground floor serving as Seattle University's campus store.
