DescriptionBen Hur (1907) - William S Hart.jpg |
English: William S. Hart as Messala published on page 47 of the April 1921 issue of Photoplay magazine. There is no indication on the cited page, including in the image's caption, that this depiction relates in any way directly to Kalem Company's 1907 film. Hart's casting in that production remains unverified and suspect, and this image more likely dates from and relates to his performances (194 of them) in the highly successful 1899-1900 Broadway production of Ben Hur. This image is one of several illustrates "Shakespeare is His Middle Name", an article in the cited 1921 reference that focuses on Hart's early stage career. Its caption does not refer to any film; it simply states, "It's hard to believe, but Bill really looked like this when he played Messala in Ben Hur." [Again, it is very likely this photograph of Hart in costume is associated with his work in the 1899-1900 Broadway production. Español: Fotografía del actor William S.
