| Description |
Houston artist, historian, and preservationist, Kirk Farris, recently shared some information about the 1904 Gable street swing bridge that had occupied the site of the McKee Street Bridge in old Frost Town. I visited the north end of the McKee bridge today. The rains have the bayou up, but I had some luck. The concrete rip rap, vegetation, debris and homeless furnishings obscured things up the bank. There are the fender piles out in the stream on both sides protecting the current McKee supports. Tucked near the shore and under the palm tree was an arc of riveted steel, about 100 degrees of what would have been about a 15 to 20 ft diameter caisson or center support for the old swing bridge, though I'm used to those being concrete filled. Any fill, though, may have been broken up in demolition. I'll have to go back when the water is down. Someone else has gotten there, bless 'em. The pitted steel had fairly recently been painted with what appears to be a gray primer. |
